Learn About Xylitol

Xylitol is a delicious healthy alternative to sugar. More importantly, it has great dental benefits like fighting plaque, preventing tooth decay, and improving overall dental and general body health.

It is a natural sweetener that tastes like sugar and is categorized as a sugar alcohol, but it has 40% fewer calories than sugar and doesn’t raise blood sugar levels. It is recommended by dentists and there are many studies that suggest it has important dental health benefits and many other health related benefits.

Note: Xylitol great for humans, but it is highly toxic to dogs. If you own a dog, keep xylitol safely contained or out of your house altogether. If you believe your dog accidentally ate xylitol, take it to your vet immediately.

Xylitol is considered a natural substance and is found in small amounts in many fruits and vegetables. Humans even produce small quantities through normal metabolism. It is a common ingredient in some higher quality sugar-free candies, chewing gums, toothpastes, mints, diabetes-friendly foods and other oral-care products. Xylitol has 2.4 calories per gram compared to 4 calories per gram with sugar.

Xylitol comes from birch trees and a plant fiber called xylan. It is not counted as a carbohydrate because it do not raise blood sugar levels. Sugar alcohol is not the same as the alcohol that makes you drunk and it is safe for people with alcohol restrictions.

Xylitol Has a Very Low Glycemic Index and Doesnt Spike Sugar or Insulin

One of the many negative effects of sugar and high-fructose corn syrup is that it can spike blood sugar and insulin levels. This can lead to insulin resistance and multiple metabolic problems. The good news is that xylitol contains zero fructose and has negligible effects on blood sugar and insulin. As a result, xylitol is a great product as an alternative to sugar and all its harmful effects.

Xylitol’s glycemic index (a measure of how quickly a food raises blood sugar) is only 7, as compared to sugar which is 60–70. It can also be considered a weight-loss-friendly sweetener since it contains 40% fewer calories than sugar. For people with diabetes, prediabetes, obesity or other metabolic problems, xylitol is an excellent alternative to sugar.
